Oregon Man Gets 20 Years After $69,000 Wildhorse Casino Robbery Ends in Shootout
A 55-year-old man from Umatilla County, who robbed the Wildhorse Resort and Casino of more than $69,000 in an armed robbery, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
According to court documents, the robbery occurred on August 17, 2022, when Javier Vigil visited the casino on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Pendleton.
He Demanded a Million Dollars from the Cash Cage Teller
While pointing a gun, he passed a note to a cash cage teller demanding $1 million. He was handed more than $69,000.
As Vigil was walking out of the casino, he saw a tribal police officer and proceeded to shoot. Gunfire was exchanged, with Vigil falling to the ground, wounded. A stray bullet also injured a bystander.
Vigil was arrested, and investigators learned that he had acquired the firearm two weeks before the robbery at the casino.
A grand jury in Portland returned a six-count superseding indictment in December 2023, which included charges of robbery, attempted murder, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

- December 19, 2023 : Six count superseding indictment returned in Portland.
- April 7, 2026 : Vigil pleads guilty during the second day of trial.
- August 4, 2026 : Sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
Apart from the 20-year prison term, Vigil was also sentenced to five years of supervised release and ordered to pay $2,040.71 in restitution to the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation.
The case was investigated by the FBI and the Umatilla Tribal Police Department, assisted by the ATF, the Oregon State Police, the Umatilla and Morrow County Sheriff’s Offices, and the police departments of Hermiston and Pendleton.
