Portland Police Say K-9 Kylo Was Killed by Police Gunfire During Shootout With Homicide Suspect

PORTLAND, Ore. — K-9 Kylo was killed by a police bullet when he was caught in a crossfire with a homicide suspect in Portland last Thursday.

Kylo Was On His Last Shift for the PPB

Kylo was on his last shift when he died. He had served the Portland Police Bureau for six years, according to a PPB press statement released yesterday.

Also killed in the exchange of gunfire was the homicide suspect, 39-year-old Eddie Brandon Todd Campbell of Portland.

An investigation has revealed that Kylo was unintentionally fatally wounded by police fire during a violent encounter between the suspect and police officers.

PPB Chief Bob Day says the decision to euthanize Kylo was taken in consultation with an emergency veterinarian.

PPB will release body camera footage and identify the officers involved within the next fortnight.

The investigation is ongoing.

Campbell Was Wanted in Connection With a Gresham Homicide

Shortly after 7 a.m. on September 24, Portland police officers received a welfare check request at a residence in the 17900 block of SE Market St. On arrival, they found the occupant of the residence deceased under suspicious circumstances.

Investigators located the suspect in the area of SE Pine St and SE 99th Ave in Portland. He attempted to flee during his arrest, and an officer-involved shooting followed.
