Portland Police Investigating Whether Human Remains Found at Two Homeless Camps Are Connected

PORTLAND, Ore. — Two sets of human remains have now been uncovered at homeless encampments in Portland over the last week and could be connected, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

At lunchtime yesterday, Central Precinct officers responded to a call from a crew who found human remains while cleaning a homeless encampment at West Burnside Street and I-405.

Initial Observations Suggest a Possible Link, Says PPB

PPB says in a statement that initial observations suggest a possible link between the discovery and that of last Tuesday, when human remains were uncovered at a homeless encampment in Downtown Portland at Southwest Harvey Milk Street and Southwest Naito Parkway.

A representative from the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the remains found by a contracted cleaning crew last Tuesday are human.

Tidings Insight
Medical examiners may use fingerprints, dental records or DNA to establish identity, then locate and notify relatives.

At this stage, PPB believes the two cases may be connected, but is awaiting further information about yesterday’s findings of human remains from the Medical Examiner, as well as from an ongoing investigation. PPB will release more information later.

Tidings Context
Multnomah County’s medical examiner investigates deaths involving unknown circumstances, accidents, overdoses and suspected homicides, helping establish the cause and manner of death.

It is unclear at this stage if two deaths are involved at the encampments, or if the human remains belong to one person.
