Portland Man Charged With Murder After Driver Was Shot at Traffic Light and Crashed Into Building
PORTLAND, Ore. — During the early hours of last Tuesday morning, a sergeant from the Portland Police Bureau’s Central Precinct found an adult male unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds in the South Waterfront district.
The victim has since been identified as 41-year-old Anwar A. Osman, of Portland, and a man known to the victim was arrested.
The incident occurred on August 4 at 4.10 a.m. when the patrol officer went to check on a vehicle that had crashed into a building in the 4000 block of South Macadam Avenue.
Osman was pulled out of the vehicle, and despite lifesaving measures, died on the scene.
This week, PPB Homicide Unit detectives followed up on leads, which led to the identification of Mahmoud Said Ali (42), of Portland, as the murder suspect.
Ali was arrested by the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) on Friday, August 7, 2026, after detectives located him in the 13100 block of Northeast Glisan Street. Following a successful Crisis Negotiation Team operation, he was taken into custody at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 8.
- August 4, 4:10 a.m. : Osman found shot after vehicle crashes into building.
- August 4 : Osman dies at the scene.
- Following days : Detectives identify Ali as the suspect.
- August 7 : SERT locates Ali on Northeast Glisan Street.
- August 8, 3:30 a.m. : Ali taken into custody after negotiations.
An investigation revealed that the shooting occurred while vehicles were at a traffic light at South Bancroft Street and South Macadam Avenue. After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, and the victim’s vehicle rolled down a hill before crashing into a building.
Ali was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center charged with second-degree murder and the unlawful use of a weapon.
