Oregon Man Sentenced After Forcing Disabled Victim to Sell Snacks in the Cold for His Profit
47-year-old Jack Patrick Hauser of Hillsboro was handed a two-year jail term on Friday for coercing a 26-year-old man with developmental disabilities into servitude.
Responding to reports from community members that Hauser had been making the disabled man sell snacks outside of the Hillsboro Esplanade shopping center since 2023,
Hauser was arrested on August 27, 2024. He had also been convicted of third-degree statutory rape in 2003 but failed to report himself as a sex offender when he moved to Hillsboro.
Hauser, who is unrelated to the disabled man, took control of his life after his mother died. Court documents indicate that Hauser destroyed the victim’s government-issued ID and withheld necessities to coerce him.
The man sometimes sold snacks in front of the shopping center for days at a time under Hauser’s instruction but without shelter or appropriate clothing. Hauser kept most of the proceeds, and the man was forced to sleep in a shed or a car, where he had no access to electricity or running water when he wasn’t working.
Washington County Judge Brandon Thompson handed down the two-year sentence after Hauser pleaded guilty to human trafficking and failing to register as a sex offender.
