Driver Shot During Traffic Stop Near Highway 26 in Clackamas County

CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. — A driver was shot and killed by gunfire involving law enforcement officers during a dramatic traffic stop in Clackamas County on Sunday evening.

The shooting, which involved Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, is now under investigation by the Clackamas County Major Crimes team.

Tidings Insight
When Clackamas activates its Major Crimes Team, detectives from multiple local agencies join the case. The point is outside review, not a same agency investigation of officers who used deadly force.

The incident shooting took place at 6.55 p.m. when OSP made contact with an impaired driver at the intersection of Highway 26 and East Brightwood Loop Road.

A car chase ensued after the motorist fled the scene, ending when his vehicle was stopped near the Barlow Trail Roadhouse.

The traffic stop ended with the use of deadly force when the suspect was struck by gunfire. He was declared deceased at the scene.

Tidings Insight
OSP saying future updates will come from the district attorney is standard for Clackamas deadly force cases. County protocol routes these investigations to the DA’s office after the initial agency statement.
