Oregon Wins Court Fight as Judge Blocks Trump Order Targeting Vote-by-Mail
A federal court has blocked an Executive Order (EO) that would undermine vote-by-mail, a well-established voting process in Oregon, 7 other states, and Washington, D.C., where all elections are conducted by mail,
Oregon was the first state to conduct all elections entirely by mail, contributing to its highest-in-the-nation voter turnout rate, at 61.5% of eligible voters.

President Trump’s March 2026 EO required states to provide sensitive voter information to the federal government, which would then create a nationwide list of approved voters.
The EO restricted mail-in voting, allowing the U.S. Postal Service to deny ballots to voters not on the federal government’s list, infringing on states’ authority to administer elections.
Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read confirmed that, on Thursday, June 25, a federal court, in a lawsuit filed by Oregon and 22 other states and the District of Columbia, blocked Trump’s order.
This is seen as a successful outcome of one of many steps Oregon elected leaders have taken to defend Oregonians’ right to vote– another win for Oregon voters.
Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read said, “The President wants to pick and choose who gets to vote, but, in America, we don’t let Presidents interfere in elections.”
Following cuts at USPS, the Secretary of State’s office recommended returning ballots for the upcoming November general election via official ballot drop boxes or by mailing at least 1 week before election day.
| Ballots mailed to active voters | 2 to 3 weeks before election |
| Drop box deadline | 8 p.m. on Election Day |
| Mail deadline | Valid postmark by Election Day |
| Recommended mail return | At least 1 week before Election Day |
| Upcoming general election | November 3, 2026 |
