Oregon Rescue Teams Free Climber Trapped Under Boulder on Mt. Hood

It took a Clackamas County multi-task force several hours to free a climber trapped under a boulder that fell on top of him on Mt. Hood on Saturday morning.

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at 10.15 a.m. and, by 12.45 p.m., was able to free the man and transport him by toboggan to a Life Flight helicopter waiting near Silcox Hut.

When members of the search and rescue operation arrived at Mt. Hood, the climber was conscious, breathing, and able to communicate with crew members.

Clackamas Fire’s rescue team used specialized equipment to lift the boulder off the climber.

CCSO activated a multi-task force, which included Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Volunteers, American Medical Response, Clackamas and Hoodland Fire Departments, the Hood River Crag Rats, Mt. Hood Ski Patrol, Portland Mountain Rescue, Pacific North West Search and Rescue, and the U S. Forest Service law enforcement division.
