Officer Under Investigation After Marion County Man Is Shot Dead in Driveway
SALEM, Ore. — A Woodburn police officer is under investigation after shooting and killing a 37-year-old resident in his driveway late on Saturday night.
The Officer Use of Deadly Force incident involving Officer Jackson Ryan is under investigation by the Salem Police Department (SPD), a non-involved outside agency.
According to a press release by the SPD, Officer Ryan confronted Israel Hernandez-Martinez on Arney Road after responding to a 911 call regarding an aggressive individual who was causing a disturbance on the outskirts of the City of Woodburn in Marion County.
SPD states that Hernandez-Martinez was in possession of multiple tire irons when, during a confrontation, Officer Ryan deployed his firearm.
When other Woodburn police officers arrived on the scene, they attempted to render medical assistance, but Hernandez-Martinez was pronounced deceased.
Oregon State Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are assisting SPD with the investigation.
No further information has been released until an objective review of the encounter is announced by a grand jury.
A grand jury reviews all officer-involved deadly force incidents that occur in Marion County.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Brendan Murphy will handle all questions and is responsible for releasing any further information.
