Nike Plans Another 1,400 Layoffs as Cutbacks Continue in Oregon
For the 4th significant round of layoffs in as many years, Nike plans to lay off another 1,400 workers, mostly in operations and technology, the company announced yesterday.
New Round Of Nike Layoffs Announced As Company’s Turnaround Efforts Continue
In a March securities filing, Nike, the world’s largest athletic footwear and apparel brand, said it would incur $300 million in cost-cutting charges, mostly from severance, as sluggish sales continue to haunt the apparel giant.
Nike reported mixed earnings in March, which followed two consecutive quarters of sales growth after five consecutive quarters of sales declines.
The company needs to overhaul its operations division (including manufacturing, distribution, technology, sustainability, and planning) as it pivots away from direct sales.
Nike’s most recent annual report indicates that it has 77,800 employees, including 10,500 at its headquarters near Beaverton, Oregon. Recent layoffs include:
- Workers at its Converse brand and in its distribution centers recently.
- 1% of its corporate workforce and an unspecified number of technology workers last year.
- 740 Oregon workers as part of a 2% cut to its global workforce that trimmed $2 billion in costs in 2024.
- Workers in several departments, including human resources, recruiting, and sourcing, were laid off in 2023

The new round of layoffs will affect workers at the company’s Air and Converse manufacturing facilities. In Oregon, a filing would be required if Nike laid off more than 500 workers at a single location.
Nike said it will start notifying impacted workers immediately.
