Million-Dollar Oregon Heist Ends With Prison Time After Gold, Cash and Guns Stolen From Coos County Vault
Four Oregon men have been sentenced to federal prison after stealing a million dollars in gold, silver coins, cash, and firearms from a Coos County home in two separate burglaries.
The men have been sentenced to a total of more than 10 years behind bars after breaking into a vault at the Coos County residence on December 19 and 23, 2023. They were sentenced in three separate trials.
The Sentences Were Handed Down in Three Separate Trials
In the first trial on June 24, 2026, Matthew Knapp (48) of Ashland was sentenced to five years of probation. Knapp was a felon found in possession of a stolen firearm.
On July 7, Kyle Vanalstine (31) and William Travis Cutlip appeared in court in connection with the robbery.
Vanalstine, of Brandon, was sentenced to 77 months in prison and five years of supervised release. Cutlip (41) of Port Orford was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of supervised release.
Daniel Knapp (58), of Port Orford, appeared last Friday and was also sentenced to 24 months in prison and three years of supervised release.
According to court documents, a federal firearms investigation began after the December 19 burglary when Matthew Knapp, Daniel Knapp, and Cutlip broke into the vault of the Coos County property, stealing about one million dollars in cash, gold, silver coins, and at least one firearm.

- Jan. 9 : Cutlip property searched.
- June 24, 2026 : Matthew Knapp sentenced.
- July 7 : Vanalstine and Cutlip sentenced.
- July 10 : Daniel Knapp sentenced.
Several days later, on December 23, Vanalstine broke into the same vault and stole about 40 firearms, including assault rifles, pistols, and at least one silencer.
More Than One Kilo of Methamphetamine Was Seized During a Traffic Stop
Vanalstine was arrested on January 5, 2024, in a traffic stop in Curry County. A search of the vehicle uncovered more than one kilogram of methamphetamine, scales, and a loaded pistol.
Law enforcement searched Cutlip’s residence in Port Orford on January 9, 2024, and seized a stolen silencer and assault rifles.
In January 2024, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Daniel Knapp’s residence and found a .22 revolver, which was unconnected to the burglary. Daniel Knapp was a felon and prohibited from having a firearm.
Cutlip pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic in firearms; Vanalstine pleaded guilty to trafficking in firearms and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine; and Matthew Knapp and Daniel Knapp pleaded guilty to felon in possession of a firearm.
