Medford Felon Sentenced After Hiding Loaded Handgun During Second Arrest

MEDFORD, Ore. — A convicted felon from Medford, 31-year-old Devon James Wright, was sentenced to federal prison yesterday after being caught on two occasions with firearms.

Court documents indicate that Wright was caught with firearms twice:

  • June 23, 2024: Police found a semi-automatic pistol and a full magazine in Wright’s backpack after a car he was in was stopped for a traffic violation. At the time, he was on parole for a previous conviction for unlawfully possessing a firearm.
  • October 26, 2024: After being stopped in a stolen vehicle but before exiting, Wright placed a loaded handgun inside the purse of another occupant next to a fully loaded extended magazine.

Federal felon in possession is a status offense. Prosecutors need to prove a prior disqualifying conviction and knowing possession, not that the gun was fired or used in another crime.

On December 8, 2025, Wright pleaded guilty to two counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm after a federal grand jury in Medford returned a two-count indictment on March 6, 2025.
