Jackson County DUI Suspect Crashes Head-On Into SUV While Driving Wrong Way on I-5

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. — A drunk driver is in a serious condition in a local hospital after driving the wrong way on the I-5 before crashing head-on into an oncoming SUV, according to Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).

The incident occurred at 10.39 p.m. on Sunday when a JCSO deputy attempted to pull over a speeding pickup in the 6400 block of Rogue River Highway.

The driver sped off towards Rogue River City, where a local police officer deployed spike strips to disable the vehicle.

Tidings Insight
Deputies can stop a chase when public risk outweighs the traffic stop, but the case can still support eluding charges if the driver knowingly flees police.

The driver, Ivan Grover Barber Jr. (43), continued driving the wrong way on the interstate until crashing head-on into the SUV. Both vehicles are write-offs, and the driver of the other vehicle is said to have suffered minor injuries.

Tidings Insight
The wrong way interstate crash matters legally because DUII can sit alongside reckless driving, assault, endangering and criminal mischief when another driver is injured and vehicles are totaled.

Barber, of Grants Pass, is facing several charges, including DUI, reckless driving, and reckless endangerment.
