Baby Born Midair on Delta Flight Moments Before Landing in Portland, Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. — Half an hour from Portland, and in mid-air, a 5lb 8oz little girl entered the world on Delta Airlines Flight 478 from Atlanta.

Named Brielle, the baby made her appearance on Friday night with the help of the in-flight crew, a doctor, and two nurses who volunteered their medical assistance. Both mother and child were reported to be in a stable condition on arrival in Portland.

Tidings Insight
In-flight births are rare medical emergencies. Crews rely on trained staff, volunteer medical passengers and airport responders once the plane lands.

The baby’s excited grandmother, from Turner in Oregon, posted on Facebook that her newest granddaughter was 18.5 inches tall. Posing in pictures with the newborn, she said she was thankful that both her daughter and the baby were okay.

The first hint of the drama unfolding onboard the Delta Airlines flight was a report received by Portland Airport Fire & Rescue, which was on standby for the plane’s arrival at 10:02 p.m. The mother and child were rushed to the hospital by an awaiting EMS ambulance.

Tidings Insight
Delta says it does not restrict pregnant passengers or require a medical certificate, but advises travelers after the eighth month to check with a doctor.
