Tens of Thousands March in Oregon Today, Demanding Limits on Trump’s Power

Tens of thousands of Oregonians are expected to take to the streets today (Saturday) in ‘No Kings’ nationwide demonstrations by citizens calling for power limits to be placed on President Donald Trump.

Portland is Expected to Have a Peaceful and the Largest Demonstration in Oregon

Portland is expected to have the largest demonstration of the more than 50 Oregon cities and towns taking part in ‘No Kings’ marches.

However, the police are expecting a peaceful march, with Assistant Chief Craig Dobson telling a news conference yesterday (Friday) that it would simply be an event at which people could exercise their First Amendment rights.

Organizers Ask Participants to Avoid the ICE Facility in South Portland

Organizers have asked Portland participants to avoid marching anywhere near the ICE detention center.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility has been a focal point for protesters opposing the federal government’s immigration policies. This had drawn the wrath of Trump, who has threatened to send in the National Guard.

The last ‘No Kings’ Protest in Portland took place earlier this year, on June 14, and was supported by tens of thousands of Oregonians.

The march ended in violence when a few hundred of the protesters descended on the ICE facility and used a stop sign as a battering ram on a glass door of the building.

The incident was labeled as a ‘riot’ by the Portland police and resulted in the arrest of three people.
