Portland Faces Trump’s Threat of National Guard Over Antifa and ICE Protests
The people of Portland are out of control and crazy, but federal authorities will be stopping that pretty soon, warns President Donald Trump.
Commenting on his decision to designate Antifa as a terrorist organization, his remarks about Portland allude to his comments earlier this month about sending the National Guard into the City of Roses.
Rose City Antifa is a left-wing anti-fascist and anti-racist political group founded in Portland in 2007.
Comments Follow City’s Land Use Violation Action Against ICE
Speaking to reporters on Friday, President Trump’s Portland threat follows a City Council decision to send a land use violation notice to the Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement (ICE) facility which has repeatedly ignored lease restrictions on the Southwest city detention center.
An investigation revealed that ICE repeatedly detained suspects overnight or for longer than 12 hours, both actions breaking the terms of the rental agreement.
President Trump’s comments about sending in the National Guard referred to repeated demonstrations outside the Portland ICE facility, which prompted agents to board up windows in the building, once again breaking terms of the agreement.
Both Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson have said that it is unnecessary for the President to introduce federal intervention.
