Five Arrested in Portland State University Clash Over Riley Gaines’ Transgender Sports Speech
Five people were arrested during an event on the Portland State University campus on Monday, where former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, a high-profile opponent of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, was slated to speak at an event not affiliated with the university.
PSU’s Campus Public Safety Office personnel requested PPB’s assistance with crowd control outside the Smith Memorial Student Union on Monday at approximately 7:00 p.m.
Social media platforms have published Videos of a handful of people trying to bully their way into the student union building as campus security guards struggle to close the doors.
During the hour-and-a-half that followed, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers, who collaborated with PSU, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, and other city bureaus, arrested five people
The following people were arrested on the PSU campus and charged with various crimes:
- 34-year-old Emery R. Hall: Disorderly Conduct in the Second Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree
- 27-year-old Levi M. Ewing: Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree
- 25-year-old Garrett W. Redmond: Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree
- 24-year-old Chiara L. Jacob: Harassment
- 20-year-old Brian P. Michaelis, 20: Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree
