Chaos Erupts Near ICE Building in Portland Hours After Peaceful ‘No Kings’ Rally Ends

After Saturday’s ‘No Kings’ march concluded peacefully at Waterfront Park, criminal activity flared up further south near the ICE building. Police pivoted their attention to the misconduct, resulting in three arrests.

 

Criminal Activity Flares Up In Portland After ‘No Kings’ Rally

No arrests were made as tens of thousands joined the Portland ‘No Kings’ rally at Waterfront Park that concluded at approximately 4:00 p.m. after the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) deployed numerous resources to the event.

After the event- as PPB members pivoted toward its planned response to ongoing protests near the ICE Building in the South Portland Neighborhood, they learned criminal activity was starting to flare up.

PPB’s resources, including Dialogue Liaison Officers, Rapid Response Team, Mobile Field Forces, Sound Truck, and Air Support Unit, managed by an Incident Command Team, were deployed.

At 5:49 p.m., reports were received that a federal officer had sustained an injury from the crowd, and PPB asked the crowd not to interfere with police and medics in their response to render medical aid. PPB later learned that the officer did not require medical assistance.

A riot was declared shortly thereafter due to ongoing criminal activity. At 8:11 p.m., officers arrested Sabian Crisantos, 25, on charges of Attempted Assault of a Public Safety Officer.

Criminal behavior escalated during the night, which prompted targeted arrests as officers on bicycles conducted visibility patrols to deter crime.

At times when officers recognized their presence escalated the crowd, officers disengaged but remained in the area to respond to any additional criminal activity. More arrests may still be made.

PPB arrested Tyson Kahnert, 20, on charges of Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, Attempted Assault of a Public Safety Officer (Two Counts), Harassment (Two Counts), Interfering with a Peace Officer, Escape in the Third Degree around 10:50 p.m. after officers saw him throwing a rock at the building. Kahnert pepper sprayed officers during the arrest.

At 1 a.m., officers arrested 38-year-old Cory Oien on Southwest Macadam Boulevard as he picked up traffic control devices around the area and placed them in his truck. He was charged with Theft in the First Degree and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII).

All three suspects were lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
