Active Tuberculosis Case Confirmed at Lane Middle School Sparks Health Department Response in Southeast Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. — On Thursday, the Multnomah County Health Department confirmed one active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) case at Lane Middle School.
TB Confirmed in Southeast Portland School
Multnomah County public health officials indicated that although the person was recently diagnosed with TB, they may have been contagious between September 3, 2024, and May 1, 2025, and could have exposed others to TB during this period.
TB is a bacteria that spreads through close face-to-face contact with an infectious individual, but the Health Department has already contacted potentially exposed individuals via an emailed letter.
TB is curable with medication, and because the infection progresses slowly, it’s vital to be treated to prevent serious illness.
Health officials expressed optimism that community spread will not occur from the single confirmed case and indicated there is little risk to the general public now. They are currently not aware of any cases connected to this patient.
