28 Animals Rescued From Suspected Neglect Case in Lake County, Several Found Dead

LAKE COUNTY, Ore. — 28 animals are under the care of Oregon Humane Society staff after the organization, with sheriffs’ deputies, conducted an animal neglect investigation on March 18 at a property in Christmas Valley, Lake County.

Tidings Insight
Because this was OHS’s second Lake County neglect assist in less than two months, the case points to a repeat enforcement burden in remote areas where local agencies rely on outside rescue partners.

17 dogs, 4 cats, 5 birds, and 2 gerbils, all living in unsanitary conditions and with no access to food or water, were rescued.

Several animals were also found dead at the premises by the Oregon Humane Society and Lake County Sheriff’s Office, who were investigating a case of suspected animal neglect.

The dogs and cats were taken back to the OHS campus in Portland, while the birds and gerbils were taken to the North Lake County Humane Society.

Tidings Insight
Sending dogs and cats to Portland but birds and gerbils to North Lake County reflects species based triage, since small mammals and birds need different housing, handling, and medical intake.
