West Nile Virus Found in Eagle Point Mosquitoes Prompting Warnings Across Jackson County
JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. — The West Nile virus, typically spread in the US by a mosquito called Culex, which is found across the country, was detected in a mosquito pool in Eagle Point after the Jackson County Vector Control District collected the mosquitoes on August 20 as part of their routine surveillance program.
The discovery of the West Nile Virus in Eagle Point is the first positive case in Jackson County this year. Jackson County residents are urged to:
- Take precautions against mosquito bites, especially those over 50 with other health conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes.
- Eliminate standing water.
- Ensure screens are in good condition.
- Avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours.
- Wear protective clothing and use repellents.
