Warrant Issued for Eugene Man After Explosion While Making Marijuana Dabs Sets Mother’s House on Fire

EUGENE, Ore. — A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Eugene man who caused an explosion that set fire to his mother’s house on the 3900 block of River Road while making marijuana dabs.

Officers from the Eugene Police Department (EPD) are searching for Derek David Davia, charged with first-degree arson after the fire that occurred last November.

In a statement, EPD says that Davia admitted to causing an explosion while making marijuana dabs in the garage of his mother’s property.

Tidings Insight
Oregon OSHA says butane and propane extraction require careful ignition control because explosion risk is real. That helps explain why a garage dab setup can quickly become a serious fire case.

On arrival, EPD investigators observed more than one dozen propane tanks and marijuana buds. There was also a strong odor of marijuana permeating the air.

Davia had fled the scene, but another man was injured in the explosion and was admitted to a local hospital.

Sometime after the event, Davia contacted 911. He said he was injured and needed to be admitted to the hospital. Davia was a few blocks away from his mother’s home.
