Train Cars Topple in Klamath Falls as Crews Scramble to Contain Spill and Reopen Roads

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — Authorities are still attending to the clean-up after 3 BNSF train cars derailed in Klamath Falls at the Anderson and Altamont rail yard early yesterday morning.

After the remote engine of a BNSF train derailed around 3:30 a.m., overturning onto its side, a second train car also derailed and overturned, followed by a third car, which derailed but stayed upright.

The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) indicated that neither tank car was breached, and only a small amount of diesel and hydraulic fluid leaked from the engine.

KCSO confirmed that there is no immediate threat to public safety, but crews are still working onsite to clean up and inspect. Anderson Way, from Altamont Drive to Avalon Street, will be closed through Tuesday, June 3, at noon.

Traffic control measures will be in place, but the Public Works Department has asked drivers to take alternate routes.
