Scammers Impersonating US Marshals Target Jackson County Residents With Fake Arrest Threats

JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) and its federal partners recently received multiple reports of scammers calling community members with threats of arrest for missed jury duty.

In the new scam, which is separate from the other recent grift where scammers use AI videos and fake deputies to target families, the scammers, who have the ability to spoof legitimate phone numbers, often make their calls look like they are from the local US Marshals office.

If someone calls you pretending to be from a law enforcement agency and asking for payment, HANG UP. Remember that JCSO and other law enforcement agencies will not call you for:

  • Missing Grand Jury, Jury Duty, or a Jury Summons
  • A Warrant- they prefer just to come find you in person
  • Money- Law enforcement will NEVER ask you to pay anything (cash, credit, wire, Crypto, Bitcoin) over the phone.

Unless you are part of an active investigation, you will not receive calls from anyone at JCSO. Even if you are not part of an active investigation, JCSO officers rarely call, but never for any of the reasons listed above. If someone is asking for money, it is a Red Flag, and you should hang up.

If you are worried about a call and want to confirm its authenticity, please call the JCSO office at 541-774-6800.
