Oregon Convicted Felon and Mother Charged After Treating 13-Year-Old’s Bullet Wound with Ice Cube and Toilet Paper

A convicted felon who is now allowed to own firearms has been charged with allegedly accidentally shooting a 13-year-old boy in Myrtle Creek, Oregon.

Cory Albert (44) told deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office that as he shot at aerosol cans on 23 April, he heard shouting and realized that the boy, who had been building a fort nearby with two other children, had been struck.

He Treated the Injury With an Ice Cube and Toilet Paper

According to court documents, Albert believed that the child had been struck either by a ricocheting bullet or a shard of rock.

In an attempt to avoid detection for his deed, he admitted to treating the injury himself with an ice cube and toilet paper before organizing to have the child taken home to his mother.

The boy’s mother, Rebeka Kleinschmidt (39), has also been charged for allegedly failing to obtain medical care for her child for nearly a week after the incident. She used a metal detector to try and ascertain if the bullet was still in the boy’s leg.

The Boy Did Not Want His Mother to Call Paramedics Because He Feared She Would Lose Custody of Him

Court records reveal that Kleinschmidt told the deputies she did not believe the injury was serious and thought the bullet had merely grazed the boy’s leg. She also claimed the child did not want her to call paramedics after the shooting because he was afraid that she would lose custody of him.

The shooting came to light on 29 April when the boy asked a nurse at the Canyonville Elementary School for an ice pick.  He was taken to a doctor who confirmed that there was a bullet lodged in his leg before referring the boy to an orthopedic specialist.

According to court records, Albert is facing charges of third-degree assault, a felon in possession of body armor and a firearm, and three counts of reckless endangerment. Kleinschmidt has been charged with criminal mistreatment and one charge of endangerment.
