Oregon Backs Off Farm Stand Regulations Amid Fears for Agri-Tourism Industry
The Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD) has halted its rule-making process regarding farm stands following a public outcry and a directive from Governor Tina Kotek.
Kotek, whose office was inundated with objections from both farmers and farm stand supporters, believes that the DLCD should engage in more dialogue before introducing any further rule-making policies and changes.
The furor revolves around the question of what activities can be labeled as ‘farm use’ and are allowable without a permit, and when a permit for a farm stand is required. The Rules Advisory Committee (RAC) met on July 18 to discuss the issue.
Farm stand owners are concerned that changes could lead to the demise of agri-tourism in Oregon. However, proponents of change believe that some farmers are losing sight of their primary function, which is to produce crops and raise livestock.
