Medford Unveils $2.3 Million Park Makeover With High-Tech Playground and Splash Pad

MEDFORD, Ore. — Offering many new features for families—and their dogs—the upgraded Howard School is now open to visitors, who can relax in the sun or shade or engage with the new attractions.

After nearly a year of construction, Howard School Park was officially reopened yesterday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony with City officials, Councilors Garrett West and Kevin Stine, as well as project partners.

The 9.2-acre neighborhood park, located at 286 Mace Road, serves around 871 households and almost 3,000 residents within a half-mile radius.

The Howard School Park makeover includes:

  • Medford’s first Lappset interactive playground equipment, designed to create a unique experience for kids, including:
    • The “Sona” interactive dance and play arch with motion-sensing technology.
    • The “Memo” interactive play pillars are equipped with 360-degree LED touch screens, combining physical activity with memory challenges.
  • A large splash pad.
  • An enclosed dog run.
  • Shade structures.
  • Picnic tables and benches.
  • Two pickleball courts.
  • A small basketball court.

Funded by a $714,300 Local Government Grant, $925,800 in American Rescue Plan Act funds, and contributions from the Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department’s Capital Improvement Fund, work on the $2.3 million project was carried out by Adroit Construction Co.

In addition, a new Portland Loo restroom is expected to be installed this fall.
