Medford Travelers Lose Budget Airline Option as Avelo Pulls Out of West Coast

MEDFORD, Ore. — Ultra-low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines has indicated that its flights out of Rogue Valley International–Medford Airport (MFR) will cease by December 2, 2025, marking the end of its West Coast operations as its focus shifts to East Coast markets.
Avelo Low-Cost Flights Shutting Down On the West Coast
Avelo is withdrawing from all Western airports, including Medford, Eugene, Redmond, Santa Rosa, and its West Coast base in Burbank, ending its nonstop flights between Medford and Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), a route it has operated since launching on the West Coast in 2021.
While complete withdrawal is scheduled for early December, most of Avelo’s West Coast operations will phase out by mid-August. The airline undertook to notify affected passengers and will rebook or refund cancelled flights.
Avelo honed in on low-cost, point-to-point routes between underserved cities. Challenges in maintaining profitability in Western markets, especially at smaller regional airports, led to the decision, which comes amid broader financial restructuring.
Avelo’s fleet and staff will be consolidated at its East Coast hubs, where demand is stronger and competition is less intense.
Several regional airports on the West Coast are left without the added capacity Avelo provided. Officials at MFR have not announced plans to replace the Burbank route. Still, the airport remains served by multiple carriers connecting Southern Oregon to major West Coast and national destinations.
While Medford will lose direct service to Burbank, passengers can still access Southern California through other nonstop routes, including flights on Alaska Airlines and other carriers from MFR to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), John Wayne Airport in Orange County (SNA), and San Diego International Airport (SAN), which remain in operation.
