Man Charged With Assaulting Federal Officer During ICE Protest in Portland Is Released From Custody

PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland man, 19-year-old Deni Jungic Wolf, charged with assaulting a federal law enforcement officer Near the South Portland ICE office on Monday night, appeared in federal court yesterday and was released on conditions.

Two nights after chaos erupted near the ICE building in Portland after the No Kings’ rally ended, about 25 people gathered in protest at the same building. Some of the protesters trespassed onto federal property and erected a make-shift shield wall, blocking traffic.

The crowd was told that the property was closed at about 11:00 pm and were directed to disperse.

More federal officers, including Customs and Border Protection Tactical Unit (BORTAC) agents, were dispatched to the building to clear the barricade. As they approached the barricade, holding shields to clear the obstruction, Wolf pushed his body into the shields.

One of the federal officers grabbed Wolf to prevent him from falling backward, and, in response, Wolf punched the officer’s head, knocking the officer’s mask from his face and exposing him to pepper spray and pepper-ball dust that had been deployed to assist in clearing the barrier.

Surveillance footage showed the assailant wearing distinctive red gloves. Wolf was wearing red gloves when he was arrested and was charged with assaulting a federal law enforcement officer, resulting in bodily injury, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.

Assaulting a federal officer resulting in bodily injury is punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison. At his first appearance in federal court yesterday, a U.S. Magistrate Judge released Wolf on conditions pending future court proceedings.
