Life Sentence for Portland Man Who Shot Stranger in Broad Daylight Traffic Dispute
PORTLAND, Ore. — Geoffrey Hammond, a Portland resident, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for shooting and killing Ryan Martin in a 2023 road rage incident.
The road rage incident between Hammond and Martin occurred on October 11, 2023, after Martin approached Hammond because Hammond’s car was blocking traffic outside a hotel. An argument ensued, and Hammond eventually pulled out a gun and shot Martin.
During the court case, Martin’s family members gave emotional testimony about the effect of the killing.
Multnomah County Judge Jenna Plank sentenced Hammond, who was also found guilty of shooting and hurting another man who was trying to take a picture of the scene, to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. He was also ordered to pay $30,000 in restitution to the state.
