Klamath County Sheriff Warns of Scam Posing as Final DMV Notice With Legal Threats

KLAMATH COUNTY, Ore. — The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) issued a scam alert yesterday after being made aware that a fraudulent message claiming to be a “Final Notice” from the Oregon DMV was circulating via text and email.

The fake DMV notice includes threatening language about “unsettled traffic violations”. It warns of license suspension, legal prosecution, and credit damage if payment is not made by July 17, 2025. The message contains a link to a suspicious payment website that may prompt you to “reply Y” or click a shortened link.

KCSO confirmed the fake DMV notice is a scam. The Oregon DMV never sends legal threats via text messages with shortened links. For official DMV business, go to www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV.

If you receive a fake alert:

  • Don’t click the link or type in any personal or payment information.
  • Don’t respond to the message.
  • Delete the message. Never trust unexpected payment requests via text.

Never trust unexpected payment requests via text. Think about contacting your bank or credit card provider and monitoring your credit if you clicked the link or entered your information.
