Intel’s Oregon Workforce Hit Hard as Layoffs Surge Past 2,000 Despite $260M in Tax Breaks
Following the unsettling news last week that the Intel Corporation planned to lay off over 500 workers, the tech giant later indicated that the number is about 4.5 times this, as almost 2,400 Intel workers will be laid off in Oregon.
Intel Oregon Layoffs Increase To 2,392
On July 8, Intel indicated 529 jobs would be cut at its Hillsboro and Aloha campuses, primarily technicians, the company’s front-line factory workers.
On July 10, a revised letter to state and local officials increased the number of layoffs in its Oregon facilities to 2,392, but confirmed in the revised WARN letter that the layoffs, which are expected to be permanent, will start Tuesday, July 15.
Despite tax breaks worth almost $260 million annually that have worked well for Oregon’s economy, the Intel facilities in Oregon, Intel’s largest site anywhere, that will be affected by the current layoffs are:
- 2501 NE Century Blvd, Hillsboro, OR 97124
- 5200 NE Elam Young Pkwy., Hillsboro, OR 97124
- 2111 NE 25th Ave., Hillsboro, OR 97124
- 3585 SW 198th Ave., Aloha, OR 97078
Intel’s second-quarter financial results are expected on Thursday, July 24, but flat revenue for the first quarter of this year has been reported.
In a message to employees in April, CEO Lip-Bu Tan already indicated that critical changes were going to be made that would reduce the size of its workforce.
No union represented the laid-off employees. They will receive nine weeks of pay and benefits, but a trickle-down effect is expected through Oregon’s economy, with reduced state tax revenues from their personal income taxes.
