Hunger Strike in Sympathy with Starving Gaza Residents by Students, Faculty, and Staff at the University of Oregon

The University of Oregon coalition of faculty, staff, and students began a hunger strike yesterday (Monday) in a show of solidarity for what they term ‘Israel’s campaign of mass starvation in Gaza.’

List of Demands

They are demanding that elected officials stop providing Israel with weapons and that they send food and supplies to Gaza.

A list of further demands by the strikers is that the University of Oregon fulfill commitments to provide Palestinian students with scholarships, uphold the sanctuary of campus protections, and stop repressing campus protests and speech about Palestine. They also calling for the university to distance itself financially from companies with ties to Israel.

Some Strikers Will Not Eat Until They Can No Longer Do So

Organizers say some strikers will desist from eating until they are physically unable to do so. Others will demonstrate the reality of reports that, on average, Gaza residents eat only once every three days.

The strike is led by the University of Oregon’s Jewish Voice for Peace. Participants are gathered at the Erb Memorial Union, the student union building on campus.
