Grants Pass Police Shoot and Kill 43-Year-Old Woman After She Fires Handguns in Roadway

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Oregon State Police confirmed that Alicia Shelton, 43, of Grants Pass, who was shot by officers after firing handguns in the roadway in the middle around midday on Saturday, was declared deceased at the hospital.

Grants Pass Police Department officers responding to multiple 911 calls reporting a female in the roadway at Grants Pass Parkway and M Street, firing handguns, on Saturday at approximately 12:30 p.m initially gave verbal commands for Shelton to drop the gun.

Tidings Context
OSP said the Josephine County Major Crimes Team was activated and state investigators are leading the case, a common setup to avoid conflicts when a local agency’s officers are involved.

She ignored them, and officers fired their department-issued firearms and struck her.

Video footage shows her holding what appears to be a gun before shots are fired. It then captures officers administering CPR to the person on the ground.

Shelton was then taken to Three Rivers Medical Center but was pronounced deceased at the hospital. There were no other reported injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and, as per standard protocol, the involved officers will be placed on paid leave.

Tidings Insight
In Oregon, officers involved in a fatal shooting are usually placed on paid administrative leave while outside investigators collect evidence and prosecutors review the use of force for any criminal or policy violations.
