Cliff Jump at Toketee Falls Ends in 40-Foot Fall and Dramatic Rescue of California Man

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — It took a multi-agency task force more than five hours to rescue a young Californian who fell 40 feet onto rocks below while jumping from the top of a cliff into a pool at Toketee Falls in the Oregon Umpqua National Forest on Monday.

Together with a group of friends, Nicholas Foy (20) of Newbury Park climbed over a chain link safety fence and climbed down to a small beach 200 feet below. The friends then took it in turn to jump from a cliff and into a pool of water.

Nicholas, who was seriously injured after hitting his head on rocks, slipped and fell 40 feet onto rocks below.

A joint task force from the Douglas Sheriff’s Office, the Douglas County Search & Rescue, Glide Fire Department, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Umpqua Valley Ambulance, and REACH Air Medical Services rushed to the scene.

They requested the United States Coast Guard to conduct a hoist, but once on the scene, they discovered that they could not reach the young man. Fire personnel then established a rope system to extricate Foy to the trail, and by 7.18 p.m. were able to transfer him into a waiting ambulance.

He was transported to a REACH Air Medical Services helicopter and airlifted to Peace Health Sacred Heart Medical Center at River Bend in Springfield.

His condition was not known at the time of going to the Press.
