An observance of Indigenous Peoples Day is set for Monday, Oct. 10.
Local Lakota Elder Ed Little Crow will give an opening prayer and talk, followed by speakers on a number of issues in the courtyard at Sevenson Union at Southern Oregon University, Ashland.
Organizers hope to bring more awareness to several issues, including abolishing Columbus Day in favor of honoring indigenous peoples (signatures of support will be taken); freedom for Leonard Peltier; the Standing Rock pipeline fight; Klamath Tribes water and salmon rights; the Nestle Water fight and Warm Springs Treaty rights; and missing and murdered Native American women.
The event is set to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Available for purchase will be buffalo stew with fry bread, $8, and pie, $2. Coffee is free. Proceeds go to the Standing Rock Protectors and Native American Student Union Scholarships.
