Two Hikers Rescued Near Green Lakes Trailhead After Losing Their Way in Winter Conditions

DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. — Two young hikers were rescued on Saturday night after becoming lost near the Green Lakes Trailhead.

After receiving the call at 6 p.m., volunteers of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Search and Rescue (SAR) team traveled to an area just beyond Mt. Bachelor, off the Cascade Lakes Highway.

Tidings Context
In winter rescues near Cascade Lakes Highway trailheads, SAR teams often deploy snowmobiles and snowshoes to reach lost hikers quickly and provide warming supplies until they can be escorted out.

Equipped with snowmobiles and snowshoes, the SAR team soon located the 18-and-20-year-old men and provided them with warming materials while assessing their medical condition.

Neither of the hikers suffered major injuries, and they were then safely transported back to their vehicle by SAR team members.

DCSO says the incident highlights the importance of planning ahead, as weather conditions in the back country can quickly deteriorate. Hikers are urged to:

  • Know your route and plan ahead
  • Check the weather forecast
  • Dress appropriately for the conditions
  • Carry a reliable device with contact numbers of emergency services.
