Thousands of Oregonians Still Haven’t Filed Taxes as October 15 Deadline Nears
The Oregon Department of Revenue has issued a reminder to income tax payers that the last tax filing extension will expire soon, and taxpayers must submit their returns by October 15.
Oregon Income Tax Filing Deadline
While over 2.1 million Oregonians have already filed their tax year 2024 state personal income tax returns, as many as 100,000 are expected to leave it till the last minute.
It’s not unusual for a large number of returns to be filed in the last week before the extension deadline, but taxpayers risk missing the deadline, resulting in penalties.
Megan Denison, Personal Tax and Compliance Division administrator with the Oregon Department of Revenue, said, “Our best advice for taxpayers is to get their returns in as soon as possible.”
The deadline for 2024 tax returns is October 15, 2025.
How To File Your 2024 Oregon Income Tax Return
The fastest way to file your tax return is electronically, as follows:
- E-filing: Nearly 95 percent of tax returns filed this year were filed electronically
- Request your refund via direct deposit: On average, taxpayers who e-file their returns and choose direct deposit receive their refund sooner than those who file paper returns and request paper refund checks.
- Only file once: Sending a paper return through the mail after e-filing will delay your refund.
- File your tax return for free: Oregon Free Fillable Forms performs basic calculations and works well for taxpayers who don’t need help preparing their returns.
- File through the IRS: Do your Oregon return directly with the state through Direct File Oregon for free.
