Suspect on the Run After Ashland Man Gunned Down on ‘A’ Street

ASHLAND, Ore. — The Ashland, Oregon, Police Department has reopened ‘A’ Street after a preliminary investigation into the shooting incident early Sunday morning that left a 40-year-old Ashland man,  Matthew Mark Vandersande, dead following a targeted attack.

’A’ Street is now open and the area is clear after an investigation that involved the Jackson County Major Assault/Death Investigation Unit (MADIU), Oregon State Police, Medford Police Department, the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office, the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Oregon State Police Crime Lab determined that there was no threat to the public.

The street was closed as officers worked an active investigation in the area of ‘A’ Street. After law enforcement responded to the scene, they taped off the area to the public. Police later confirmed the case involved a homicide and recently confirmed that the victim was Vandersande, who was lying on the ground next to a vehicle.

Vandersande, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators indicated that Vandersande was inside his parked vehicle on ‘A’ Street when an unidentified suspect approached and fired multiple rounds, which struck him several times. Security videos from nearby businesses show the suspect, dressed in dark clothing, fleeing east on ‘A’ Street toward North Pioneer Street.
