Stoned Roseburg Man Accused of Shooting at Cars on I-5 Before Police Stop Him With Spike Strips

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A “stoned” man, who told police that cars were following him, allegedly began shooting at vehicles on Interstate 5 in Roseburg on Saturday night.

Three vehicles were involved in the shooting, and the driver of one reported that a bullet had lodged just above his seat and that his back window had been shot out.

State Police and Sheriff’s Deputies were Involved in a High- Speed Chase

After the shooting incident, Roseburg resident, John Deptuch (57) was then involved in a high-speed chase before Oregon State Police and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies managed to stop him using spike strips.

Tidings Insight
The chase mattered because police were trying to stop a driver accused of firing at traffic on Interstate 5, not just a routine impaired driving case.

Deptuch was taken into custody and is now facing multiple charges, including first-degree attempted assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Tidings Context
In Oregon, attempted first degree assault means prosecutors allege a substantial step toward causing serious physical injury with a deadly or dangerous weapon.

Law enforcement officers seized a bong, dabs, and a bag of marijuana from Deptuch’s vehicle.
