Salem Police Shield Hit by Bullet in Shootout Before Suspect Surrenders

SALEM, Ore. — Salem police officers were involved in a shooting incident on Saturday afternoon after responding to a report of a burglary near the 4300 block of 25th Avenue NE.

According to a police news release, a subject fired shots at officers as they approached the premises. A bullet struck a ballistic shield held by an officer, and while no officers were hit, one sustained minor injuries from debris caused by the gunfire.

 

Backup Was Given by the Salem SWAT Team and Negotiators

The Salem SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were summoned to the site and took tactical command. The adult male subject surrendered and was taken into custody after a period of negotiation.

The man has been identified as Vincent Mendoza Chavez (33), of Salem. He has been lodged at the Marion County Jail on charges of attempted aggravated murder, attempted assault on a public safety officer, and unlawful use of a weapon.

The Salem police were assisted by the Oregon State Police, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and the Keizer Police Department.

The investigation is ongoing.
