Portland Man Surrenders After Eight-Hour Rooftop Siege Following Domestic Violence Report
PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Police tactical teams were involved in an eight-hour stand-off yesterday when a man, wanted for several crimes, climbed onto the roof of an apartment complex in the Hazelwood Neighborhood following a report of domestic violence.
Officers from the East Precinct responded to a report of domestic violence at an apartment in the 10400 block of East Burnside Street at 7.26 a.m.
The suspect refused to surrender to the police and climbed out of a window and onto the apartment building roof.
The police then surrounded the building, but the suspect refused to surrender. By 10.09 a.m., reinforcements were called to the scene, including a drone and K-9 unit, the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), whose officers, trained in crisis communication, attempted unsuccessfully to de-escalate the adult male.
Several apartments in the building were evacuated for safety reasons, and the police cordoned off the area, closing East Burnside Street between Northeast 102nd Avenue and Northeast 108th Avenue.
Almost eight hours after the siege began, the man surrendered at 3.20 p.m. and was taken into custody. No force was involved, and no injuries were reported.
The man’s identity will be released after he is formally charged.
