Police Investigating Double Homicide Night in Salem After Two Fatal Shootings an Hour Apart
SALEM, Ore. — Salem Police officers had a busy night on Tuesday, after two fatal shooting incidents were reported within an hour of each other. Both victims had multiple gunshot wounds.
Two Salem Fatal Shootings In One Night Under Investigation
Police are investigating two separate overnight fatal shootings related to incidents that occurred overnight, which are now two separate homicide cases.
- Responding to a report of a collision in the area of 40th PL and Carson DR SE. Salem, after a caller reported a crash and found a person in the roadway at about 12:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of 40th PL SE, police found an adult male with multiple gunshot wounds, later identified as 30-year-old Nicholas Micheal MacFawn. He was transported to Salem Health but was later pronounced deceased.
- About an hour later, at 1:30 a.m., several callers reported gunfire at a homeless campsite in Wallace Marine Park, West Salem. Officers responding to a wooded area in the northern portion of the park found a man with multiple gunshot wounds who was later identified as 60-year-old Jacob Collazo, who was known to live in a campsite at the park. Because of the rugged terrain, officers carried the man out to awaiting paramedics who rendered aid before he was transported to Salem Health, but he later died from his injuries.
The families of both victims have been notified, and the Salem Police Violent Crimes Unit is leading these active investigations, but the Oregon State Police Major Crimes Section is assisting with the Wallace Marine Park homicide investigation.
Detectives believe the incidents are unrelated and isolated, but no further details are being released at present as the investigation is ongoing.
