Oregon Wins Back Millions for Schools After Attorney General Strikes Deal With Trump Administration

As many Oregon schools prepare to reopen next week, there will be relief that Attorney General Rayfield has reached an agreement with the Trump Administration in one of several multi-state lawsuits. In terms of the agreement, the full balance of education programs formerly clocked must be released.

Oregon Education Funding Reinstated By Agreement

Following Oregon’s lawsuit to stop Trump’s surprise education grant freeze that could have paralyzed schools last month, AG Rayfield confirmed that he finalized an agreement that is a major win for Oregon schools and forces the Trump Administration to release the full balance of remaining education funding for six longstanding U.S. Department of Education programs by no later than October 3, 2025.

Attorney General Rayfield said, “Our students, teachers, and families deserve certainty as they head into a new school year, not the chaos of important programs being held hostage to advance the administration’s unpopular political agenda.”

The Trump Administration’s funding freeze jeopardized after-school learning programs, teacher preparation, and critical support for students learning English in Oregon.

On July 14, a multi-state coalition of attorneys general filed a lawsuit and motion for preliminary injunction, arguing that the freeze violated federal funding statutes, the federal budget process, and constitutional separation of powers principles.

The Administration released an initial portion of the withheld funds a few days after the lawsuit was filed. Following the agreement, the rest will be released on time. Oregon schools will receive the full relief they sought in court.

Attorney General Rayfield said, “Restoration of these services in advance of the school year means schools can plan for the success our students deserve.”
