Oregon Sees 52% Spike in New Business Filings But Still Ranks 36th Nationwide
Since 2019, new business filings have exceeded 59,000- an increase of 52%. Yet the state still ranks only 36th nationwide in terms of openness to business.
Oregon Ranks 36th For Business Creation In The U.S.
Business application data from the U.S. Census Bureau between 2019 and 2024 was analysed by Experts at digital mailbox provider iPostal1 to identify the states where Americans are most likely to start a new company.
New York leads the nation with 39,422 business applications per 100,000 residents, followed by Florida (20,461) and Georgia (16,783), while the fewest were filed in North Dakota, with just 95 per 100,000 people, followed by Delaware (145) and Idaho (156). Oregon, with 502 applications per 100,000 people, ranked 36th.
Business applications from 2019 to 2024 increased the most in Wyoming- by a whopping 215.8%, while Delaware ranked second with a 121.6% increase. Oregon saw 59,623 filings in 2024. While this is an impressive 52.2% rise since 2019, Pacific Northwest neighbor Washington, which ranks 12th, had 5,145 applications per 100,000 people, while Idaho ranked 48th with 156 per 100,000.

Jeff Milgram, CEO and founder of iPostal1, noted that some states are catching up, but access to funding, local policy, and the confidence that new ventures will be supported play key roles in the creation of new businesses.
