Oregon Man Arrested After Woman With Restraining Order Against Him Escapes Brutal Assault

A woman was severely injured in an early-morning assault in Springfield on Monday by a man who is currently under a restraining order.

Anthony Leon Vancil (39) was arrested by Lane County Sheriff’s Office deputies later the same evening. He is in custody in Lane County Jail on charges of second-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, violation of a restraining order,  the unlawful use of a weapon, and coercion.

It was also established that Vancil, from Drain, had failed to appear in court on a conviction for the illegal possession of methamphetamine. He is now serving that sentence in the Lane County Jail.

Tidings Context
In Oregon, violating a restraining order is a separate crime, so Vancil can face those counts on top of the assault, kidnapping and coercion charges from the same incident.

Woman Sought Shelter inside Business Premises

The assault leading to his arrest unfolded at 3.30 a.m. on December 1 when LCSO deputies and officers from the Springfield Police Department responded to a report by an injured woman who had sought shelter at business premises on 42nd Street, Springfield.

The severely injured woman was admitted to an area hospital for treatment.

The woman told deputies that she had been beaten by Vancil, against whom she had a restraining order. She said the assault began at Hayden Bridge Boat Landing and continued as Vancil drove around the area.

Later, the woman managed to escape from the vehicle and sought refuge inside the business premises.

Law enforcement officers were unable to locate Vancil. However, later that evening, he arrived at the Lane County Parole & Probation Office in Eugene, where he was detained.
