Oregon Is Getting $66 Million From the Sackler Family and Purdue Pharma for Fueling the Opioid Crisis

Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, part of a bipartisan coalition of states, confirmed yesterday that Oregon could expect up to $66 million of the $7.4 billion national settlement reached with the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma for their role in fueling the national opioid crisis.

Sackler Family and Purdue Pharma Lawsuit Settlement

In addition to almost $645 million in settlements Oregon has recovered since July 2021 in national lawsuits against several pharmaceutical manufacturers, distributors, and retailers for their role in the opioid crisis, the $66 million payable by the Sackler family is payable under the settlement from the up to $6.5 billion the Sacklers will pay and up to $900 million payable by their company, Purdue Pharma, L.P.,

Rayfield indicated that the settlement will be allocated towards much-needed resources, such as drug treatment and prevention programs.

While the agreement is still subject to a complex bankruptcy process, Oregon’s acceptance is a significant step in finalizing the deal, which will see funds distributed to the states who filed the lawsuit, local governments, affected individuals, and other parties who have previously sued the Sacklers or Purdue.

The details of the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma settlement are:

  • Amount payable: Up to about $7.4 billion
  • Oregon’s Share: Up to about $66 million
  • Oregon Payment Timeline: Payable over 9 years, faster than the 16-year timeline for most other states.
  • Fund Allocation: 45% goes to the state’s Opioid Settlement Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Fund, established by Oregon statute in 2022, and 55% to Counties and Cities to support local opioid prevention, treatment, and recovery programs.

Rayfield said, “Oregon families deserve justice, and every dollar we recover will go toward healing our communities and building a future free from this crisis.”
