Oregon Governor Sends National Guard Troops Home and Tells Kristi Noem There Is No Insurrection

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek sent members of both the Oregon National Guard and the California National Guard home yesterday, and also met with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem at the Portland airport upon her arrival, where she emphasized that there is no insurrection in Portland.

Yesterday, Kotek directed the United States Northern Command to take immediate action to demobilize Oregon’s 200 National Guard citizen-soldiers currently stationed at Camp Rilea and return the 200 California National Guard members presently stationed at Camp Withycombe to California.

The governor’s orders follow two court-ordered restraining orders, first to block Trump’s attempt to seize control of the Oregon National Guard,  and then to stop Trump’s multi-state National Guard push which resulted in a federal judge ordering that Trump can’t deploy the National Guard from any state, a clear and forceful rebuttal to President Trump’s misuse of states’ National Guard.

Governor Kotek said. “Let’s remember that these Oregonians are our neighbors and friends, who have been unlawfully uprooted from their families and careers – they deserve better than this.”

Oregon Governor Meets With Kristi Noem In Portland

Governor Kotek met with Noem at Portland airport yesterday to stand up for Oregonians. She personally reached out to schedule a meeting after hearing through unofficial channels that the secretary might be visiting Portland.

Kotek pointed to the two court orders and highlighted that there is no legal basis for military deployment in Portland, reiterating again that there is no insurrection in Oregon. She was clear that she had confidence in local law enforcement to meet the moment.

Governor Kotek requested that ICE agents obey Oregon laws when engaging in federal operations and reminded Noem that she remains focused on doing everything possible to protect Oregonians from military intervention or harmful federal law enforcement tactics.

Governor Kotek said, “Oregon is united against military policing in our communities.”
