Oregon Diesel Prices Climb Above $6.25 as National Average Hits Record High

Diesel prices have reached a new national record, with the average U.S. price climbing to $5.9015 per gallon on September 7, according to AAA. But Oregon is experiencing an even sharper increase, with the state’s average diesel price reaching $6.2547 per gallon.

National Diesel Prices Reach New Record

AAA reports on gas prices show that the national average price of diesel has risen from $5.6035 a week ago and $5.3474 a month ago, reaching $5.897 per gallon on September 6. This is dramatically higher than the $3.7106 recorded a year ago.

The increase is significant beyond the price paid at the pump because diesel is deeply embedded in the U.S. economy.

Higher diesel costs matter especially in Oregon because trucks carry by far the largest volume of freight:

The US Energy Information Administration says most products consumed by Americans are transported by trucks and trains powered by diesel engines.

Diesel also fuels much of the nation’s farm and construction equipment, while diesel generators provide backup and emergency electricity for facilities including hospitals, industrial sites, and utilities.

Oregon Diesel Higher Than National Record

Oregon is experiencing an even sharper increase, with the state’s average diesel price reaching $6.2547 per gallon, according to AAA. That’s nearly 36 cents above the new national record.

Oregon’s average has risen from $5.7641 a week ago and $5.5134 a month ago. It was $4.4709 a year ago, meaning the current price is almost $1.79 higher than at the same point in 2025. Prices are particularly high in southern Oregon. Medford-Ashland is averaging $6.4270 per gallon, while Grants Pass has reached $6.3740.

Still, Oregon has not broken its own diesel record. The current statewide average remains about 22 cents below the state’s July 2022 peak of $6.4738 per gallon.
