Oregon and California Unite to Stop Trump’s National Guard Push

Retaliating to Saturday’s court ruling barring President Trump from deploying 200 Oregon National Guard members to Portland, which he described as “war-ravaged,” Trump deployed 300 California National Guard members to Oregon.

In a new court ruling on Sunday, the same judge halted any federalization, relocation, or deployment of any guard members to Oregon from any state.

California National Guard Heading Home From Oregon After Newsom Wins Lawsuit Restraining Trump

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek advised on Sunday that, on the same day that a federal judge blocked Trump’s attempt to seize control of the Oregon National Guard, 101 California National Guard troops arrived unannounced in Portland overnight, and more were on their way. Kotek, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, and Portland Mayor Keith Wilson denounced the unexpected arrival.

Kotek confirmed that there is no threat to national security nor any insurrection in Portland. She said there is no need for military intervention in Oregon, emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations against what she described as “unlawful actions by the Trump administration.”

Attorney General Rayfield said Trump is “hellbent on deploying the military in American cities, absent facts or authority to do so.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom said on X, “His deployment of troops isn’t about crime- it’s about power. He is using our military as political pawns to build up his own ego. It’s appalling. It’s un-American.”

On Sunday, the State of California joined the Oregon lawsuit. They urgently sought a restraining order against Trump’s deployment of National Guard personnel. The state’s joint motion for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) can be found here.

During an evening telephone hearing, U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut granted a Temporary Restraining Order, through at least October 17, when she will hear arguments over whether the restraining order will be suspended or extended.

In a statement released after 9 p.m. last night, Newsom indicated that Judge Immergut, a 2019 Trump appointment, in handing down the order said, “This is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law. Defendants [the Trump Administration] have made a range of arguments that, if accepted, risk blurring the line between civil and military federal power — to the detriment of this nation.”

Newsom confirmed that the California troops are now headed home.
